Brazilian textile sector slashes water usage
The Brazilian textile industry has cut its water usage by 90% since the early 2000s, according to the country’s textile and apparel industry association, Abit.
It says of the 100 litres used to produce 1kg of fabric 10 years ago, now only 10 litres of water are needed.
Besides this reduction, water is reused by factories and in other sectors, or is returned to the environment after being treated.
“In the textile and clothing industry, the costs of water and electricity are very relevant,” said Abit president Rafael Cervone. “Therefore, we had to adapt to a global reality, which includes changes in the production process, economic and environmental issues. Those who have not adapted, eventually became bankrupt.”
Abit developed the Selo Qual certification for the industry, which rewards ethical, social and environmentally sustainable ways of production.
