Brazil boosts performance-fabric know-how through Portuguese partnership
Textile Association of Portugal (ATP) and the Textile and Clothing Industries of Portugal (CITEVE) have signed an agreement to transfer textile technology and know-how to Brazil through the country’s apparel associations, including Abit.

As part of the deal, an international symposium on technical textiles will be held in Rio de Janeiro on April 8 and 9 to discuss ‘textiles of the future’ in various industries, including sportswear.

The event will feature companies that already produce these materials and end users, with speakers from Nike, Rhodia, Dupont, Dini Textile and Invista.

“The textile and apparel industry in Brazil is not limited to fashion,” said Rafael Cervone, president of Abit. “We have several companies that produce these technological textiles, with applications in the medical field, in civil engineering, in the transport and agribusiness industries and also in clothing.

“We also have some research centres developing textiles which are unknown to us, because they are not yet on the market. I'm sure that this partnership with CITEVE, which brings together all the major textile technologies across Europe, will change the level of Brazil in this area in a few years.”

Textiles is one of the fastest growing sectors in Brazil, increasing at average of 10% per year by value, with revenues exceeding $2.8 billion, and supporting 44,000 jobs.
