AAFA updates restricted substances list

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has published 14th edition of its restricted Substances List (RSL), which it describes as a “helpful resource for the industry as we pursue collaboration and harmonisation of complicated rules and restrictions”.

Chemical usage is one of the topics being discussed as part of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which will reduce or eliminate import taxes on clothing, textiles and footwear between the US and EU.

"In a complex global supply chain, the U.S. apparel and footwear industry will find the updated AAFA Restricted Substances List to be a helpful tool as part of an overall robust chemical management program," said John Eapen, AAFA environmental committee chairman and vice-president sustainability at thread manufacturer American & Efird.

The recently launched AAFA app turns the RSL into an interactive tool designed to help users navigate the 200 chemicals listed.
