European consumers confused about flax

17/07/2014
The majority of Europeans are unaware that 80% of linen is produced in the continent, according to a survey by the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp (CELC).

It found that fourth fifths of respondents were unaware of its origins, but 61% said they are willing to pay more for a product that can be certified as European.

Almost 60% of interviewees thought flax is grown outside Europe, and 19% admit to having no idea where it originates.

Europe produces 137,650 tons of scutched flax from 71,000 hectares cultivated (2013 harvest). France is responsible for 80% of the continent’s production.

European flax is GMO-free, a commitment signed by all the CELC producers as part of the European Flax Charter.

The Italians and the British are the leading consumers of linen in Europe – although it accounts for only 1% of the world’s textile fibres.

CELC represents 10,000 European enterprises in all stages of flax and hemp production.
