An NBA basketball player is among investors in wearable tech firm Athos, which has recently closed a $12.2 million Series B financing.

Jermaine O’Neal has backed the nascent company alongside the chairman of Golden State Warriors basketball team, Joe Lacob, and venture capital firms True Ventures, DCM and The Social+Capital Partnership.

“When I saw Athos for the first time, my immediate thought was how much more longevity it can give athletes by allowing us to train smarter and prevent injury through a better understanding and fine tuning of our bodies,” said Mr O’Neal.

The apparel is able to collect and analyse muscle activity and effort, as well as heart and breathing rates.

Athos will use the investment to commercialise its product and invest in scaling manufacturing and marketing efforts.
