Archroma dyes used for Patagonia’s ‘eco’ denim

Chemicals company Archroma has highlighted that its Advanced Denim Technology is behind the new jeans from Patagonia that the brand says moves away from the „typically filthy“ production processes.

The denim is coloured with sulphur dyestuffs that bond more easily than conventional dyes, according to the Swiss group. This results in shorter production lines that use 84% less water, 30% less energy and emit 25% less CO2.

The new denim strategy, launched in August, is to use only 100% organic cotton and Fair Trade certified sewing.

“Because we don’t sandblast, bleach or stonewash our denim to make it look worn, we avoid the serious social and environmental downsides of doing so,” said Patagonia.
