Adidas has said sales in China – its second-largest market – reached a record €2 billion last year, a result of “executing upon a decisive strategy”.

In the first nine months of 2015, sales grew 18.4% compared with 2014.

The German group has 8,500 stores and launched segmented retail stores, including women’s, sportswear collective and basketball, during the year.

It has outlined a five-year plan for the country, built around “cities, speed and open source”, aiming to “meet the demands of China’s burgeoning middle class who are placing a higher emphasis on quality of life experiences”.

Colin Currie, managing director of adidas Group Greater China, said: “I’m proud of our consistent delivery of innovative products and engaging marketing campaigns. This solid financial result is a reflection of our success in Greater China.”

China is a key market for big brands, but some can find it difficult to crack. There are a number of popular domestic sportswear companies – some of which are growing strongly, but others have been hit by slowing consumer spending, rising wages and excessive inventory.
