Patagonia unveils new wool standard

02/08/2016
Outdoor brand Patagonia has released details of its new wool sourcing standard, created in response to concerns over animal welfare which prompted it to drop one of its wool suppliers in Argentina in 2015.

The Patagonia Wool standard is built on the provisions set out in the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) but it goes “above and beyond” this baseline, according to the company. This includes extended animal welfare provisions concerning transportation and slaughter; better training in compassionate handling and avoiding shearing injuries; and consistent availability of food and water.

Patagonia also says it will carry out an audit process that exceeds the RWS, which was released by the Textile Exchange in June. This extended audit will take place at both the shearing and lambing stages.

In a post on its blog, the company said it has taken extensive steps in the last 10 months (since the controversy over its Argentinean supplier) to “develop a new wool supply chain that reflects high, and verifiable, standards for both animal welfare and land management”.
