Drop in value of Pakistan’s textile exports

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan decreased 7.42% year-on-year between July 2015 and June 2016. The period corresponds with the country’s 2015-16 financial year.

The data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed that Pakistan earned $12.46 billion from textile and apparel exports during the period, compared to $13.45 billion in the 2014-15 financial year.

In apparel, knitwear exports were down 1.54% to $2.37 billion but non-knit readymade garments increased 4.83% to $2.2 billion.

Textile exports showed a sharp drop. Exports of raw cotton fell 47.89% and cotton yarn exports were down 31.77%. There were also declines in the export of cotton fabrics (-9.71%) and bedwear (-4.14%).

In terms of imports, there were drops in synthetic fibre (-9.13%) and synthetic and artificial silk (-9.11%). The value of textile machinery imports rose, however, by 2.68%.
