Puma adds partners to supplier incentive scheme

Sportswear manufacturer Puma is joining forces with banking company BNP Paribas, World Bank Group member International Finance Corporation (IFC) and IT platform provider GT Nexus to offer financial incentives to suppliers with strong environmental and social standards.

Sportstextiles.com reported in April that the German manufacturer had signed an agreement with IFC, but BNP Paribas and GT Nexus have now joined the initiative. It will apply to more than 300 of Puma’s global manufacturing partners.

The companies said the supplier financing scheme will provide “financial incentives” to suppliers that adopt higher environmental, social, and health and safety standards.

"This is the first program in our industry, which takes into consideration a supplier's score in PUMA's environmental and sustainability rating as a bonus or malus on related fees," said Lars Sørensen, Puma's chief operating officer. "Thus our supplier's investments in sustainability are rewarded, which is an additional incentive for them to improve their environmental and social standards."
