Nike and Patagonia rewarded for circular economy efforts

17/01/2017
Ahead of the 2017 meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos Klosters, Switzerland (January 17-20), the organisation’s Community of Young Global Leaders held its third annual Circulars awards ceremony.

The awards are given to individuals and organisations that have made notable contributions to the creation of a circular economy. They highlight advances from the private sector, public sector and civil society that drive innovation and growth while reducing the world’s dependence on scarce natural resources.

Sportswear manufacturer Nike and outdoor brand Patagonia shared the Circular award given to a multinational company. Nike was rewarded for its work on material efficiency and waste reduction, while Patagonia was recognised for its history of sustainable innovation in the apparel industry. Its Worn Wear initiative, which encourages its customers to have their garments repaired rather than replacing them, was highlighted as a good example of embedding the principles of the circular economy into its business strategy.
