Nike discusses sustainability goals

Nike now incorporates recycled materials into 71% of its footwear and apparel products. During the 2014/2015 financial year the company reduced carbon emissions by 19% per unit whilst shipping more than 1 billion units. This reduction didn’t affect revenue, which grew 52% between 2010 and 2015. The company increased water efficiency in apparel materials and dyeing finishing by 18% per unit and in footwear manufacturing by 43%. 92% of footwear factory waste was diverted from landfill or incineration.
For the future, Nike has set three sustainability aims: minimise its environmental footprint, transform its manufacturing and unleash human potential. The company wants zero waste from contracted footwear manufacturing to be sent to landfills by 2020. It also plans to source 100% of its products from factories that meet the company’s definition of “sustainable” by 2020. By the end of 2025, Nike aims to achieve 100% usage of renewable energy at Nike-owned and operated facilities.
