Timberland sets sustainability goals

Outdoor brand Timberland has established the Timberland Environment Product Standards (TEPS) programme across all of its product categories, setting out its sustainability goals for the next four years.

“Building on the legacy of our Earthkeepers collection, we’re taking our commitment to making products responsibly to new heights,” said Stewart Whitney, president of Timberland. “With TEPS, we are setting environmental targets for all product categories, not just one collection. With this increased focus, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of virtually every product we make — across footwear, apparel and accessories.”

As well as product goals, the company was also set targets for 2020 in outdoor and community categories.

Product goals
• All footwear to include at least one component containing recycled, organic or renewable (ROR) content.
• All leather for footwear and apparel to be sourced from tanneries who have received a Silver or Gold rating from the Leather Working Group for their environmental efforts.
• All cotton to come from organic, US-origin or Better Cotton Initiative-certified sources.
• All footwear to be completely free of PVC.

Outdoor goals
• The planting of a total of 10 million trees by 2020. (This initiative began in 2001 and Timberland has so far planted 8.7 million trees.)
• Renewable sources should account for 50% of energy used, with a reduction in overall energy use of 10%.

Community goals
• Timberland employees have so far completed one million hours of service in the community. The target for 2020 is to complete another 500,000 hours.
• By 2020, 80% of employees should have engaged in community service.
