Timberland to develop green spaces

23/06/2016
Outdoor brand Timberland has announced plans to create or restore green spaces in five cities over the next five years. Each year the brand will choose a city with one of its stores and match that store’s retail floor space with an equivalent amount of green space.

“We believe green spaces are the heartbeat of a community. They do so much more than provide a place to play and explore; they also help enhance quality of life in the form of improved health and overall wellbeing,” said Timberland sustainability director, Colleen Vien.

The first stage of this initiative got underway on June 22 as more than 100 volunteers from Timberland and its partners joined forces with non-profit organisation GrowNYC to begin restoring New York City’s United We Stand garden. The area was damaged by a fire 18 months ago and the volunteers spent the day laying the foundations for a community garden for those living in the local Mott Haven neighbourhood. They will continue to work on the project in the coming months and it is hoped the space will be open by Autumn.

Timberland will reveal the other four cities to be selected for the initiative later in 2016.
