Timberland to align environmental efforts with VF

27/09/2016
Outdoor brand Timberland has released an update on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. Timberland splits its CSR into three categories: product, outdoor and communities.

In the second quarter of 2016, 95.5% of the leather used by Timberland was produced by tanneries with a silver or gold rating. 44% of the cotton used in Timberland apparel was either organic, of US origin or sourced via the Better Cotton Initiative.

Timberland says it sourced from 357 factories during the period. Of these, 99.5% met or exceeded the company’s expectations during audits of social and labour compliance. Those that did not meet the required standards had their orders withheld until corrective action was taken.

In the outdoor category, Timberland said it plans to align its future environmental targets with those of parent company VF Corporation. This includes a 10% reduction in total energy use by 2020. It will attempt to offset 50% of its energy use by renewable sources.

Regarding community initiatives, which Timberland values very highly, the report says the majority of the projects completed during Q2 were focused on the outdoors in support of Earth Day (April 22). Among the projects were the rebuilding of a community garden in the Bronx borough of New York, the building of homes for non-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity and the planting of trees in China and Vietnam.
