Honduras targets more sustainable textiles sector
17/05/2016
Of the funding pledged, $1.6 billion will be invested in new equipment and technology specifically for the textile industry with the rest going towards improving infrastructure, tackling problems in the energy sector and implementing nationwide training and education programmes. There will also be steps to reduce the environmental impact of the sector.
The government expressed a commitment to improve the conditions for workers within the textile industry with help with housing one of the areas targeted. Steps are also being taken to enshrine in law a bill of workers’ rights.
Textile exports from Honduras already make up 0.8% of global textile exports and it is the second most important exporter by value in Central America behind Mexico. The aim is to transform the country into a sustainable sourcing hub in order to differentiate it from local competitors. Honduras is currently the 65th largest supplier of textiles to the EU but the project aims to improve this to 25th. The government also wants to become the 5th largest exporter of textile goods to the US.
