Adidas unveils 2020 sustainability goals
Sports group adidas has laid out its sustainability strategy for the next four years. It continues the group’s sustainability drive following the announcement in 2015 of the development of a running shoe made using recycled plastic salvaged from the ocean.

The German company unveiled a series of goals in its 2016 sustainability report, with a reduction in water and energy use amongst the key aims. Adidas is targeting a 35% reduction in water usage by 2020, both at its own sites and its material suppliers. By 2020, adidas’ suppliers will be expected to reduce their water and energy usage by 20%.

Adidas has also reiterated its desire to further reduce the amount of paper used by company employees. It aims to achieve a 75% reduction from the levels of 2008 by 2020, although the company missed out on its target of a 50% reduction before 2015.

The company also intends to switch to only using sustainable cotton by the end of 2018 as well as reducing by 50% the amount of waste products that are sent to landfill sites by 2020. A further objective is to reduce carbon reductions by 3% annually during this period.

Adidas reported a sales increase of 10% in 2015, with particularly strong growth for the adidas and Reebok brands, with 12% and 6% increases respectively. Revenues for the whole group reached €16.9 billion, with profits of more than €8.1 billion, an increase of 18%.
