Under Armour’s Lighthouse bears first fruit

31/01/2017
Sports brand Under Armour has unveiled the first apparel collection made in the UA Lighthouse, the fast-prototyping and design centre it opened in its home city of Baltimore in 2016.

The collection, which the brand is calling the Arris Project, features a women’s sports bra and legging set. It uses an innovative material that needs half the time to dry, as well as offering added support to the wearer. 2,000 units have been made available, exclusively online.

Under Armour granted Sportstextiles.com access to the facility in November 2016. During the visit, Lighthouse director, Adam Bayer, said it would allow the brand to test new design ideas and to make and refine product prototypes almost immediately. This would considerably shorten the time required to take a new footwear or apparel products from concept to store shelf.

Although the company has said it intends to increase the volume of product it manufactures in the US, this is part of a wider strategy of “local to local” manufacturing, whereby products are produced close to the market in which they will be sold.

A full round-up of our visit to the Lighthouse is available in the January/February 2017 edition of WSA magazine.
