Lululemon comes under threat from sportswear rivals

Canadian yogawear brand Lululemon has dropped a lawsuit against sportswear manufacturer Under Armour, which it claimed had infringed on its designs for sports bras.

Bloomberg has reported that the two companies jointly asked a US judge to dismiss the case, which revolved around two patents Lululemon holds for its Energy Bra design. They concerned the product’s distinctive look and its criss-crossed strap design.

Lululemon had claimed various Under Armour products illegally copied the design and asked for any profits its rival had gained from selling them to be transferred.

The Canadian brand has been put on the back foot in recent weeks following an announcement by Nike that it would increase its investment in sports bras and yoga pants, two of Lululemon’s most important product areas.

Among the plans Nike has announced is the opening of ‘pant studios’ in 5,000 stores. This would allow it to showcase new styles for workouts and leisure. Lululemon currently has just over 400 stores in the US and Canada.
