Dyneema more than doubles the strength of Patagonia’s latest denim

US outdoor brand Patagonia has incorporated Dutch group DSM’s Dyneema ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres into its new range of workwear.

The material features in what the brand calls Steel Forge Denim. It features a blend of 92% organic cotton and 8% Dyneema. Patagonia has said the addition of Dyneema more than doubles the fabric’s tear strength.

The new workwear collection includes a denim jacket and denim pants.

DSM’s has said Dyneema as combining maximum strength and minimum weight, claiming it is 15 times stronger than steel and 40% stronger than aramid fibre on a weight-for-weight basis. Sports and leisure are among the sectors that have used Dyneema.
