Dyneema creates the “alpine jacket of tomorrow”
Netherlands-based textile maker DSM Dyneema has partnered with technical apparel designer Conroy Nachtigall to create an alpine jacket using Dyneema Composite Fabric.

The fabric, previously known as cuben fibre, is made using Dyneema’s ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres. The company says these lightweight fibres are considered the strongest in the world, being fifteen times stronger than steel on a weight for weight basis. It also floats on water, as well as being durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals.

Dyneema Composite Fabrics have been applied to a range of industries, including commercial fishing, competitive yachting and military and law enforcement. The company is now looking to bring about a revolution in the performance apparel industry.

The collaboration with Mr Nachtigall is part of The Dyneema Project, an initiative designed to bring together innovative companies – from brands to textile mills – to create fabrics, apparel, footwear and accessories that offer better performance than any other products currently on the market.

Dyneema created a short documentary entitled ‘Sending It’ as part of this project. It showed the reactions of a variety of alpine sports enthusiasts in British Columbia, Canada as they tested a prototype of the jacket, which it believes is the lightest and strongest ever created.
