DSM Dyneema adds colour to its offering

DSM Dyneema, the maker of Dyneema ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre, has produced the fibre in black, which will it says will expand its use in markets including sportswear.

Until now, Dyneema fibre has only been available in its natural white colour. If users wanted to use the fibre in an application requiring colour, they needed to post-treat it. But UHMWPE fibres are almost inert chemically, so the colours, which are only on the surface tend to wear off.

Black Dyneema is similar to white Dyneema fibre, except that it is permanently coloured throughout its cross-section. The colouring process has no effect on any of the key mechanical properties of the fibre.

The Dutch company claims Dyneema is the world’s strongest fibre on a weight-for-weight basis.
