Water-saving textile project offers 'less thirsty' fabrics
22/03/2019
The Blue Lab project was founded by German NGO Drip by Drip. The key partners are fibre manufacturers Lenzing and Asahi Kasei, yarn manufacturer Tearfil, fabric manufacturer Tintex and apparel brand Blue Ben.
Drip by Drip has explained that the water savings are achieved right from the cultivation of the raw materials. Savings are also made during the fabric dyeing process, while water recycling has been practiced wherever possible.
Blue Lab fabrics can be purchased directly from the manufacturer, with 10% of the sales going towards wastewater projects in Bangladesh. For its part, Blue Ben has created a unisex sweater using the fabrics.
The initiative was presented at the ‘Water – Chapter Bangladesh’ conference in Berlin on March 22, which is World Water Day.
"Developing alternative, less 'thirsty' materials is essential to relieving the pressure that the global fashion industry is putting on local water and sanitation systems in water-stressed regions," the conference organisers said.
"We want to understand natural water cycles, the relationship between our consumption and an increasing lack of fresh water in other countries, as well as innovations that might change the game drastically."
