South Africa’s footwear and clothing industries prepare for boost

The clothing and footwear industries in South Africa should get a boost in 2020 now all parties have signed the Retail Masterplan for Clothing, Footwear and Leather (R-CTFL).

This will tie big retailers in the country to sourcing higher volumes from domestic manufacturers: they have committed to buying 66% of stock domestically by 2030.

Noel Whitehead, chairman of the South African Leather Industries Association, told specialist publication S&V Leather that an increase of 10 million pairs sourced from South Africa over the next five years would make a huge difference to manufacturers struggling with the economic downturn.

He suggests the country imports 210 million pairs of shoes per year, makes around 60 million and exports around 5 million.

Many Owen, chair of the Association of SA Manufacturers of Handbags, Luggage and General Goods, also told the publication: “We trust that the increased monitoring of our borders by Customs will help to stem the tide of illegal imports and translate into opportunity in the handbag sector in the year to come."

The masterplan also aims to create more than 70,000 manufacturing jobs.
