Allbirds open-sources carbon footprint tool
San Francisco-based clothing and footwear firm Allbirds has open sourced its carbon footprint calculator, making it available to competitors and the general public in the interest of ameliorating climate change.
“If competition got us into this mess, perhaps collaboration can get us out,” Allbirds said on its website.
After introducing carbon footprint labels for its own footwear and apparel last year, the company is currently encouraging green-minded consumers to sign a Change.org pledge demanding that the entire fashion industry attach carbon footprint labels to products.
Allbirds’ co-founder and co-CEO, Joey Zwillinger, commented: “For too long, many brands have focused on marketing sustainability rather than actually implementing holistic, high-impact solutions - and to an extent, it’s worked. If we want to continue pushing fashion towards a more sustainable future, we need brands to take responsibility for what they share with consumers.
“Having a key, universal identifier like carbon footprint to evaluate sustainability claims and force accountability from businesses is critical to drowning out the noise.”
