Allbirds lands on activewear

San Francisco-based firm Allbirds, best known for its use of sustainable material (such as wool, sugarcane and eucalyptus) in its casual footwear, recently jumped into the activewear market.

The performance clothing range, named Allbirds Natural Run Apparel, consists of leggings, running shorts, bike shorts and different styles of running tops. Merino wool and yarn spun from eucalyptus pulp fibre are the key ingredients.

Allbirds said that the range took two years to develop following “thousands” of testing hours and more than 70 iterations. Singling out the line’s leggings, it told reporters that the bottoms tested up to two times more breathable than synthetic pairs on the market.

According to the company, the apparel further “meets every industry benchmark” for technical breathability, comfort stretch, sweat-wicking and quick-drying properties.

A spokesperson commented: “As with all of our products, we packed Natural Run Apparel full of premium natural fibres, designed with carbon consciousness in mind.

“Unlike most sportswear brands that put their innovation muscle into oil-based plastic or default to off-the-rack synthetic material blends, we invest our research and development resources into developing low-emission natural alternatives, while prioritising recycled resources to fill the gaps.”

Allbirds aims to achieve 75% natural or recycled materials across all product categories by 2025.
