US-based Kraig Biocraft Laboratories (Kraig Labs), a maker of genetically engineered spider silk-based fibres, has selected a manufacturer for its first apparel range, Spydasilk, which it is preparing to launch alongside Singaporean partner Kings Group.

The developer suggested that its chosen producer for the direct-to-consumer line is based in Vietnam, where it completed construction of a biotech research laboratory in 2019. 

“The network we have assembled to launch Spydasilk brings together top textile science, fashion, marketing and branding experts,” chief operating officer at Kraig Labs, Jon Rice, commented. “Our vision for the mass production and distribution of products built upon the amazing capabilities of spider silk is now quickly becoming a reality.”

Kraig Labs added that its latest partner, a third-party contractor, has been in business for over two decades. It therefore boasts strong ties to Vietnam’s entire textile ecosystem, the company said, which it expects will enable the unnamed firm to engage the “best” mills in the realisation of Spydasilk-branded performance apparel.
