Adidas harnesses NASA-born superpolymer

Rheon Labs’ smart superpolymer technology forms the backbone of Germany-based sports brand adidas' latest activewear range, Techfit Control, described as a “high-tech” line of “advanced support” exercise leggings, tights and tops.

Born of a NASA project originally, and since honed over a 15-year period by researchers at Imperial College London, Rheon technology’s high strain-rate sensitivity and energy absorbing properties deliver responsive control, adidas said, due to strategic placement of the film in reactive thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) strands across major muscles. Each garment boasts 76% recycled polyester content.

Adidas’ own interlock fabric constructions variously supply a second-skin fit and feel, unrestricted movement and low-to-medium compression “from waist to ankle” in the bottoms, it added, while application of its moisture-wicking Aeroready technology is designed to enhance wearer comfort by keeping the body cool.
