Only 4% of adidas brand polyester now not recycled

Germany-based sports brand adidas has revealed that 96% of all polyester it uses now comes from recycled fibres, suggesting it is on-track to phase out virgin polyester by the close of 2024, one of its core sustainability goals.

Expanding on progress made so far, senior director of sustainability at adidas, Viviane Gut, commented: “In 2017, adidas made the commitment to replace virgin polyester with recycled, wherever possible, by 2024.

“We know that it is important that we continue to share our progress and deliver against that commitment. But, while we are proud, this is a step, not a solution.

“There is still much more that we want and need to achieve so that we can become a bigger part of the solution than the problem. We are as motivated as ever to keep innovating and collaborating to create new possibilities.”

The company described its efforts since 2017 as full of challenges, but transformation across the “entire supply chain” had helped it embrace new technical solutions and dream up “possibilities that previously didn’t exist”.

More change is expected as adidas continues to test and design in new raw materials, reconsider its processes and design choices in light of circularity and work towards reducing its carbon footprint, the brand continued.
