SAC and Covestro join Zero Discharge programme

The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme has announced that the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) and polymer developer Covestro have become new contributors to its work.

SAC’s main focus is building up the Higg Index supply chain measurement tool for all industry participants to understand the environmental and social and labour impacts of making and selling products and services.

For its part, Covestro supplies high-tech polymer materials, including waterborne raw materials for textiles, that enable the production of coated textiles and polyurethane without solvents.

By joining, these organisations commit to supporting ZDHC’s goal of widespread implementation of sustainable chemistry in the textile and footwear industries.

“We’re excited to see continued support for the elimination of hazardous chemicals and are delighted to welcome Covestro and the SAC as contributors,” said ZDHC executive director, Frank Michel, on making the announcement.

He pointed out that ZDHC and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition share a large number of overlapping brands. One of the main objectives of the ZDHC Programme is to “reduce duplication and confusion of standards” within the textile and footwear value chain, and Frank Michel has said collaboration is key to achieving this.
