Winner of World Sneaker Championship named
US footwear retailer Foot Locker has announced Maxwell Lund as the winner of the 2016 World Sneaker Championship, a contest created by the Pensole Footwear Design Academy.

It became the first global sneaker design competition when it was organised in 2014. Its aim is to discover and develop the next generation of sneaker designers. The winning design is selected by a panel of industry judges after the public has narrowed it down from 64 finalists in a series of head-to-head eliminations.

Mr Lund’s sneaker (pictured) was handcrafted in Portugal and features a moulded EVA outsole, three different grades of Portuguese leather, his signature lasered on the top of the pull tab, the World Sneaker Championship logo on the heal and metal lace tips. Each shoe comes in a box with straps, which can be converted into a backpack.

“The World Sneaker Championship changed everything for me,” said the 2016 winner. “Before the tournament, footwear design was nothing more than a dream of mine. This tournament has made me believe in myself.”

His design will be released in limited quantities at selected Foot Locker stores around the world and online. There will only be 300 pairs available, for the price of $180.

“We’re excited to partner with Pensole to bring World Sneaker Championship to the next level by selling the winning sneaker at Foot Locker,” said Stacy Cunningham, vice president of marketing for Foot Locker. “Pensole Footwear Design Academy continues to inspire the next generation of sneaker designers and we’re thrilled to have some of the industry’s most innovative sneakers available exclusively at Foot Locker.”

D'Wayne Edwards, founder of the Pensole Footwear Design Academy, said there had been more than 5,7000 registrants from over 57 different countries. “The reach of sneaker culture around the globe is really amazing to see,” he added.
