Pensole to offer course on functional apparel design
24/07/2017
The courses will be taught by Angela Medlin, an apparel design veteran who has worked for global brands, including Nike, Adidas, The North Face and Levi Strauss & Co. She has also served as apparel design director for the Jordan Brand.
FAAS will focus on designing performance apparel and accessories. More specifically, students will learn about creating active and protective clothing that helps keep the wearer warm, cool, comfortable and/or dry through materials, fit, construction, and other techniques.
“The establishment of the Functional Apparel and Accessories Studio gets us closer to closing the loop of offering key careers that replicate the product creation team in a company, but in a learning environment,” said D’Wayne Edwards, founder of Pensole. “We currently offer footwear design, colour design, material design and brand design. Adding functional apparel and accessories in partnership with Angela Medlin, with her background and experience, are a natural fit for Pensole’s continued development and expansion.”
The students attending FAAS classes will experience the same “learn by doing” curriculum of other Pensole programmes. They will be introduced to all aspects of performance apparel design, including how to use consumer insights, concept development, sketching, construction, materials and storytelling. The programme will also examine professional skills like branding, interview techniques, networking, portfolio development, and verbal and visual presentation.
The first FAAS programme will begin in Autumn 2017 as part of Pensole’s partnership with the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). The Pensole x PNCA Design Initiative is a new intensive design programme focusing on footwear, functional apparel and accessories, and colour and material. It will include 30 students from around the world.
