Film to document Polartec’s ultra-relay project
Textile manufacturer Polartec and women’s running specialist Oiselle are to release a film documenting their successful attempt to help an all-female team to complete gruelling US ultra-relay race the Speed Project.

Sportstextiles reported in March that the two companies had come together to help guide the team of six women, known as team Bird Strike, through the 344-mile race, which runs from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The six support crew were also all women.

Oiselle was able to call on the support of Polartec product managers Karen Beattie and Karen Whitter to find the best fabrics to wear during the race. Ms Beattie was responsible for the creation of Polartec’s innovative Delta cooling fabric, which the runners wore as part of Giselle’s Flyout collection. Ms Whitter is responsible for Polartec’s breathable Alpha insulation.

The all-female team eventually crossed the finish line in Las Vegas after 44 hours, 27 minutes and 11 seconds, securing seventh place in the race.

Their feat will be documented by a short film called Birdstrike. It will have its debut as part of the Force of Nature Campaign run by outdoor clothing and equipment co-operative REI. The film will be exclusively screened at REI flagship stores in Washington on June 14 and in Seattle on Thursday 22, before its digital release on June 23.
