It is one of three brands from the swimwear category to have been awarded the standard, as well as the first China-based brand to be a recipient of the distinction.
Project Just was launched in 2015 by Natalie Grillon and Shahd Alshehail. Its aim is to help consumers make informed choices about the fashion products they purchase. It hopes this will allow the fashion industry to become more transparent and sustainable.
The Seal of Approval is a standard only awarded after extensive research into a brand’s environmental and social practices. Among the areas it assesses are labour conditions, traceability, and community.
Finch uses Repreve recycled fibres from US yarn manufacturer Unifi in its swimwear products. These fibres are made using recycled plastic bottles. Unifi ensures Repreve is traceable and certified through its U Trust certification programme.
“When we began, we were looking for a supplier that understood our mandate of providing a transparent supply chain to our customers,” explained Heather Kaye, Finch co-founder. “We found that commitment in our collaboration with Unifi; through the use of Repreve, they were able to help us create a high-quality product for the good of our consumers and the environment.”
Project Just also praised Finch Designs for its attitude towards the ‘slow fashion’ movement, explaining that it repeats 85% of its prints and styles year after year to encourage responsible purchasing. It added that the brand aims for its products to be worn a minimum of 200 times.
