Kraig eyes medical applications for spider silk

30/08/2017
Spider silk-based fibre developer Kraig Biocraft has announced that it has delivered the first samples of its ‘Dragon Silk’ fibres to an unnamed medical equipment firm for performance and application suitability testing.

Despite its current focus on fulfilling a contract with the US Army, Kraig has said it decided to supply a small amount of fibres to a healthcare firm with “extensive expertise in medical technology development and innovation”. It will now be tested for a variety of properties, including strength and elasticity.

“It seems like we learn about amazing new potential spider silk medical breakthroughs on a near weekly basis, so we believe that medical technologies will be a very important space for Kraig’s future,” said CEO and founder Kim Thompson. “As the promise of our fibres becomes increasingly evident, the tests will allow engineers and product designers to understand our fibres’ unique properties, work to define specific opportunities, and accelerate future fibre innovation.”
