Kraig to expand domestic production capacity

Spider silk-based fibre developer Kraig Biocraft has begun installing a new commercial-scale cocoon processing machine that will allow it to expand its US production capacity.

The company said the machine is expected to be fully operational by the end of April. It replaces the smaller cocoon processing machine that Kraig was previously using to fulfil contracts with the US army.

Kraig expects the increased capacity and efficiency of the new equipment to free up production staff and lower overall costs.

“This new equipment can process more cocoons in one hour than we currently process in a month,” revealed Jon Rice, Kraig’s chief operating officer, adding that it would sustain the company’s domestic production capacity through 2019.
