EOG report brings good news for outdoor industry
New research by the European Outdoor Group (EOG) indicates that the European wholesale outdoor market grew 7.2% in value in 2017.

This is the main takeaway from its latest State of Trade report, which uses data from 115 brands across Europe and analyses information for seven main categories.

The report states that the European wholesale outdoor market was worth €5.86 billion in 2017. Based on the wholesale figures, the estimated retail value of the outdoor market last year was €12.3 billion.

According to the research, Germany, France and the UK, the three largest individual country markets, make up 50% of the sector. The German market grew 3% and the UK market grew 8% but there was a dip in value of 2% in the French market.

All product categories recorded year-on-year growth, with the exception of tents. The strongest performance came from footwear, which recorded growth in value of 13.4%. Apparel, the largest category, grew 5% in value.

Pauline Shepherd, EOG head of market research, said the 2017 State of Trade report was “very encouraging”, adding that it suggests a “vibrant and successful” wholesale outdoor sector in Europe.
