Sole and shoemaker Vibram is celebrating after its Furoshiki wrapping sole, unveiled in June 2016, was given the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass), an Italian industrial design award first handed out in 1954.

The prize has been managed by national design association ADI since 1964. It aims to acknowledge and promote quality in the field of industrial designs made in Italy.

Vibram’s Furoshiki wrapping sole won in the sport-performance and innovation category. It was recognised for its minimalist design, ease of use, adjustable fit and multifunctional quality.

“This award carries particular significance as it is the highest honour in the industrial design circle in Italy,” said Michael Gionfriddo, CEO and president of Vibram. “This is a huge accomplishment for the Vibram design team and an impressive recognition for Vibram Furoshiki in front of a wide range of products.”

Vibram presented the Furoshiki wrapping sole at the Pitti Uomo fashion event in Florence in June 2016. It takes its name from the Japanese technique of wrapping an object in a single length of cloth.
