Isbjörn of Sweden makes the switch to rail freight

10/07/2019
Outdoor children’s clothing brand Isbjörn of Sweden has said it will switch its method of freight to train from the autumn-winter 2019 season. It currently uses sea and occasionally air.

This change is part of the brand’s ‘Green @Heart’ strategy, through which it aims to make all aspects of its business more sustainable.

It will now use train to transport its products from the factories where they are made in north east China to Sweden for distribution.

Making this announcement, Isbjörn explained that switching to train freight would mean a journey time of four weeks, compared to the two months it currently takes by boat. It will also mean an end to last-minute airfreighting if delays occur.

It said airfreight accounted for 69% of the carbon dioxide released in transporting its products last year, a figure it believes this could have been 16 times smaller if transport had taken place by train. Other benefits it mentioned include a reduction in diesel pollution and the avoidance of potential damage to garments caused by the moist conditions encountered on a boat.

Of this change, Maria Frykman Forsberg, CEO of Isbjörn, said: “For more than 15 years we have endeavoured to be as sustainable as we possibly can. Now that China has invested significantly in its rail infrastructure, we can now use a much more climate-smarter mode of transport from China to Sweden. We will use rail as far as Finland and then the rest of the journey to Sweden will be by road and electric trucks where possible.”
