Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototypes expected to fetch $1 million

Auction house Sotheby’s has made Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototypes, worn by the artist during a Grammys performance in 2008, available in a private sale.

The footwear, arguably foundational to Mr West’s Yeezy sneaker empire (he has created Yeezy products in collaboration with adidas since 2013), is reportedly expected to fetch more than $1 million.

“This pair is critical to the development of the Yeezy franchise, which has become one of the most important sneaker and lifestyle brands in history,” head of streetwear and modern collectables at Sotheby’s, Brahm Wachter, said.

Originally sold as “Grammy worn” shoes in benefit of the Portland, Oregon-based Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, a charity Nike often supports (according to Sotheby’s), the auction house also employed external consultants Suede One to photoanalyse the footwear - in addition to looking at build, tagging, box and makeup - to ensure the sneakers’ authenticity.

The shoes are currently on view at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where they will remain until April 21.
