New Balance launches MT1996 in Japan
Boston-based sports brand New Balance has unveiled MT1996, a new line of outdoor apparel and accessories for the Japanese market.
Inspired by the firm’s MT580 off-road running shoe, first released as a Japan-only model in 1996, even the range’s triangular graphic logo echoes the footwear design’s prominent carbon-fibre Rollbar midsole, which was a stark visual departure from the more slimline athletic footwear styles competing for local shoppers’ attention at the time. The MT580 was itself modelled after the brand's Made in USA 585 trainer.
Fast forward to this year and, in theory, New Balance's MT1996 collection embraces the design challenge of developing apparel and accessories that would have meshed well with the MT580s when first released – providing scope for a head-to-toe, on-brand ensemble.
The line variously incorporates technical features such as 4-way stretch, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) 40+, ripstop and waterproof materials, reflective logos and in-built carabiner hooks. Created for both men and women, it includes shorts, hoodies, jackets, t-shirts, skirts, dresses, sweatshirts, backpacks and more.
