Lycra publishes first Planet Agenda updates
Fibre developer The Lycra Company has issued its Planet Agenda Update, the first in a series of annual sustainability reports named after its in-house Planet Agenda framework, first established in 2008.

The guidelines focus on corporate responsibility, manufacturing excellence and product sustainability.

Speaking directly to the firm’s customer base, chief executive Julien Born introduced the document as follows: “As you have set ambitious sustainability goals, we have developed our goals and action plans to complement yours and help drive measurable change in our industry. We are all on this journey together.”

These goals include targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from company-owned fibre production and processing sites by 50% ahead of 2030, versus a 2021 baseline. The business also signed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)’s Call-to-Action Commitment Letter this year, with plans to set science-based targets for reduced emissions by 2024.

Mr Born further noted the longer-term nature of ongoing efforts to make recycling garments with a high Lycra fibre content a possibility, more details of which he said will be shared over the coming year. “We are encouraged by our progress to date,” he stated.

A deal between biobased 1,4-Butanediol alternative maker Qore and The Lycra Company, signed last month, is set to enable large-scale commercial production of bioderived Lycra spandex from 2024, onwards.
