Cordura celebrates 50 years of fabric innovation

US fabric developer Cordura has marked 50 years of supplying the bag and pack industry by spotlighting key innovations and collaborations, in addition to the expansion of its digital ‘fabric finder’ platform.

“Since Cordura brand nylon fibre entered the backpack market in 1973, we have continuously worked to create products that are stronger, tougher, lighter and longer lasting,” the ingredient brand’s business development director, Cindy McNaull, said.

“We are very proud of the five non-stop decades focused on durable innovation that led to new ideas, new technologies and new ways to meet every challenge of the fast-moving, performance-driven bag, pack, luggage and load carriage market.”

Key innovation milestones along the Invista-owned brand’s journey thus far include Cordura’s original or classic range, made with its high-tenacity, air-jet textured nylon 66 filament yarns, plus locked-in colour fabrics line TrueLock and the introduction of its Lite, UltraLite and 100% pre-consumer recycled nylon re/cor RN66 products.

The first backpack made with Cordura fabric, the Serac bag by Colorado outdoor brand Kelty, debuted in 1973. More recently, the company teamed up with frequent collaborator Mystery Ranch on packs for luxury fashion brand Dior’s latest men’s collection, for which its re/cor RN66 fabrics were used.
