Invista partners with Epoch Biodesign on nylon 6.6 recycling tech
In a striking turn of events, Invista has signed a memorandum of understanding with Epoch Biodesign, a biotech start-up based in the UK, to develop the recycling of post-consumer nylon 6.6. Now a Koch company, Invista was formerly a division of DuPont, the company that invented nylon back in the late 1930s.

The collaboration will combine Epoch’s AI-engineered enzymes with Invista’s expertise in polymerisation and global scope. The two partners aim to produce “customer-validated, virgin-quality nylon 6.6 at commercial scale”. Nylon 6.6 is used in many industries, from apparel to automotive and industrial applications, but the partners noted that few recycling solutions have reached industrial scale.

In other news, the polyamide and polypropylene  producer has announced the appointment of a new president and CEO, Nancy Kowalski who will take on her new responsibilities on March 1st, when the current president and CEO Brook Vickery retires after 40+ years at the company. Ms Kowalski joined Invista in 2004 as director of corporate reporting, and has since held leadership positions in finance and supply chain.

Invista has also recently reviewed its industrial footprint and announced changes in its operations. It will be closing its factory in Gloucester, England, transferring its production to a facility in Kingston, Canada, to serve its customers in North America and Europe. The company is considering expanding capacity for some sites, citing the Anlon factory in Shanghai, China. These decisions are expected to affect approximately 150 employees.
