Now operational, the facility has capacity to ship 76 million pieces annually or 485,000 per day, limited to VF’s Vans and The North Face brands initially.
Around 550 individuals are expected to be employed there during peak trading periods.
It was built in partnership with automated logistics technology provider Vanderlande to deliver “state-of-the-art automation and [fulfilment] capabilities” to owned retail stores, wholesaling partners and e-commerce. Customers in California, Nevada, Arizona and southern Utah will have their online orders fulfilled in a single day.
The building’s design and construction has obtained gold-level LEED certification, including use of 48% recycled materials, plus annual cost savings of 56% due to its planned energy efficiency.
Up to 98% of construction waste was diverted from landfill sites during the build.
Vice-president for VF’s West Coast distribution centre transition, Jon Watschke, added that the centre had been “designed with employee health and well-being in mind”. Beyond making best use of natural lighting, this extends to indoor-outdoor “restorative areas”, on-site fitness facilities and dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging areas.
