New spin on Re.Uniqlo upcycling project in Harajuku

Japanese casualwear retailer Uniqlo has announced a new “used clothing project”, the latest thread to its Re.Uniqlo apparel recycling initiative, beginning with a pop-up inside the company’s Harajuku store in Tokyo between October 11 and 22.

The temporary outfit will accept clothing donations for inspection and reprocessing, before they are then washed and dyed to create vintage-look effects ahead of resale.

Prices range from just under $7 for a second-hand sweatshirt, fleece or shirt, to $10 for bottoms and outerwear, and $20 each for cashmere knits. In terms of customisation, eighteen different patch varieties are available, priced at around $3.50 or ¥500 apiece.

A portion of proceeds will be shared with Shibuya City Social Welfare Council, to help improve and promote health and well-being programmes for children local to the ward.

Uniqlo notably opened its first store in Mumbai on October 6, to be followed by an inaugural Roman retail store in Galleria Alberto Sordi next spring.
