Icebug launches traceable outdoor shoe pilot with Spoor
Swedish outdoor footwear business Icebug has launched a pilot collection made from “fully traceable” Nordic nubuck leather supplied by Spoor.
Owned by Scan-Hide in Denmark, Spoor uses processing-proof laser technology to print unique identification digits on its hide, the same as those borne by each cow or calf’s ear tag. This enables documented, animal-to-finished-product traceability for its leathers. The company can similarly provide “order-specific climate data”, explained head of sustainability at Icebug, Maria Munther.
Previously, the brand had to use standard figures for South American-made hides, which typically resulted in a higher climate footprint. Better data and opting to source Nordic leathers is therefore expected to reduce carbon emissions significantly, she added.
Icebug’s sustainability lead continued: “When an initiative proves [to be] so beneficial to the climate, the forest, animal welfare and social conditions, we are quick to scale up and, of course, share what we’ve learned with other brands in the industry.”
The idea is to eventually convert the entire production to Spoor leather.
