Outlast introduces aerogel-enhanced fibre
Outlast Technologies, based in Germany, has expanded its range of Aersulate insulation solutions with the launch of an aerogel-enhanced yarn. “The viscose fibre has 50% aerogel by weight,” Ari Pachur, business development manager, told Sportstextiles at Performance Days last week. The patent-pending product can be used for thermal insulation and felts, it can also be treated to have flame retardant properties or resist high temperatures, he said.

The first product to be launched in the Aersulate range was an ultra slim padding (1 to 3 mm thick). “Aersulate insulation can be a good solution for many different applications, especially when space is limited,” said M Pachur.

Aersulate padding was tested against a same viscose nonwoven without aerogel and showed a 35% higher thermal insulation. The material’s insulating properties are due to the extremely porous structure of aerogels, effectively composed of up to 99.8% air.

“The consistency of aerogel can be best described as liquid dust particles which spread uncontrollably throughout a room within seconds thanks to their minimal thickness. This is why processing is a big challenge,” commented Volker Schuster, Outlast's head of R&D.
