Toray and the North Face have been awarded gold awards at the OutDoor Friedrichshafen trade show in Germany for products that “have the potential to become trendsetters”.

The panel - made up of industry and trade experts, outdoor journalists and athletes - examined 361 products; 45 more than last year, which competed for fewer awards.

"After eight successful years of the OutDoor Industry Awards, we felt it was time to make a few adjustments. We’ve made the decision process more transparent and therefore more accountable and are demonstrating more quality over quantity when it comes to the award winners,” said show director Stefan Reisinger.

Seven products received gold awards: the Atmos AG 65 backpack from Osprey;  Toray’s 100 % plant-based PES; Speed Ascent shoe by Salewa; HyperSmock 2.0 jacket by Berghaus; Winter Gas cannisters by Primus; Alpha² FL Men’s shoe by Arc‘teryx; and The Fuseform™ Originator Jacket from The North Face.

General secretary of the European Outdoor Group, Mark Held, who was on the panel, said:  "The development of hybrid materials is very exciting, with some interesting new innovations emerging. There is also a move towards more sustainable, natural-based fibres, with some interesting technologies coming through.”

Toray’s 100 % plant-based polyester fabric, based on 30% molasses and 70% plant-based paraxylene, was said to represent a “paradigm shift in the textile industry”.
