Euratex conference: Bright spots on horizon for European textiles

20/11/2014
Delegates at the Belgian-based annual conference of the European Apparel and Textile Confederation (Euratex) heard that companies must “reinventing manufacturing” to ensure their competitiveness in a changing global market.

Serge Piolat, president-elect of Euratex, welcomed a statement from Jean-Claude Junker, president of the European Commission, who said the goal was to strengthen the industrial base by increased investment in infrastructure, education, research and innovation.

Next year could present better export possibilities for European companies, as well as lower raw material and oil prices, said Edwin De Boeck, chief economist at Belgian bank KBC. However, he warned that consumer confidence is still low.

Gildas Minvielle from IFM-Paris, a French higher education institute, said there had been a positive trend for the European exports of apparel and textile products, driven by the growing consumption needs of the middle class in the emerging markets.

Professor Marc Van Parys from Technical University HoGent presented research on new production and finishing processes, which he said should be brought to the market as a way to shape the future of the European industry.

Euratex's member federations represent 173,000 companies with a turnover of €166 billion, employing 1.6 million workers.
